Connecting MetaTrader
To place and manage trades, TTMT needs to connect to your broker account. It links to your MetaTrader 4 or 5 account through the cloud — there is no VPS to rent, no software to install, and no terminal to keep running. This is the first connection you make after choosing a plan, because the steps that follow need to know which symbols your broker offers.
Prerequisites
Before you start, have these ready:
- Your broker credentials — login ID, trading password, and server name.
- Your platform — know whether your account is MT4 or MT5.
- A TTMT account with a plan selected.
Use your Trading Password, not the Investor Password
The Investor Password is read-only and cannot place orders. TTMT needs the Trading Password (sometimes called the Master Password) to manage your trades.
How the Connection Is Hosted
TTMT can connect to your MetaTrader account through more than one provider. For almost everyone, the default is the right choice.
| Provider | Availability | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| MetaAPI Cloud | Default, recommended | A broker-managed cloud connection. Nothing to install, nothing to keep running. Broker-managed features — such as broker-side breakeven and trailing — are available where your broker supports them. |
| Self-Host Terminal / Self-Host Client | Limited preview | A self-hosted connection for advanced setups. Enabled per account on request. |
Limited preview
The self-host providers are in limited preview and are enabled per account on request. Availability, behavior, and naming may change before general release. Most accounts should stay on MetaAPI Cloud; contact support if you'd like to take part. See Self-Host Accounts.
Trailing stops on self-host
Broker-managed trailing stops work on Cloud connections where your broker supports them. The self-host gateway connection deliberately does not support broker-managed trailing — it skips activation rather than promise a trail it cannot guarantee. Plan your trailing rules around the provider you connect.
Two Ways to Add Your Broker
On MetaAPI Cloud there are two shipped ways to attach your broker:
- Search the broker list by name and pick the matching server.
- Upload a server file (
.srv) if your broker is not in the list.
If you have connected this broker before, Reconnect Previous Account lets you reconnect without re-entering everything.
TIP
Already connected this broker before? Use Reconnect Previous Account to skip re-entering your credentials.
Step-by-Step Connection
1. Start the Connection
During setup (right after picking a plan), or later from the Accounts page, click Add Account.
2. Find Your Broker
Search by name; matching servers appear (for example ICMarkets-Live01 or FTMO-Demo). An FTMO challenge trader might search "FTMO", pick FTMO-Server2, and label it "FTMO 50K Challenge".
If your broker is not listed, upload the .srv file from your broker's MT4/MT5 install folder or from their support team. A trader on a niche broker can grab the file from the MT5 config folder and upload it here.
3. Enter Your Credentials
| Field | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Account Name | A friendly label for this account | "FTMO Challenge", "Personal Demo" |
| Login | Your numeric account ID | 12345678 |
| Password | Your trading password | (not the Investor password) |
| Server | Your broker's server name | ICMarkets-Live01 |
| Platform | MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5 | MT5 |
4. Confirm Your Symbols
After your credentials connect, TTMT reads the symbols your broker offers and you confirm which ones you trade. This drives automatic matching of signal names (like "GOLD") to your broker's symbol names (like "XAUUSD.ecn"). It is a preview of symbol mapping; most brokers match out of the box, and you can add manual mappings later — see Symbol Mapping.
Without this confirmation, a signal for "GOLD" on a broker that calls it "XAUUSD.r" would be skipped as symbol-not-found — confirming your symbols is what lets the match happen.
5. Finish Connecting
A progress indicator shows the status. This typically takes 1–3 minutes, after which the account shows a green Connected badge.
INFO
TTMT creates an encrypted connection to your broker. It can only manage trades on the specific account you connected — it cannot reach any other account.
How Your Account Is Protected
- Your credentials are encrypted at rest.
- The connection can only manage trades on the one account you connected — it cannot reach any other account.
- TTMT never has broker-wide access.
Demo, Live, and Prop-Firm Accounts
TTMT works the same with all three:
- Demo — risk-free testing of channels, strategies, and settings.
- Live — real capital, after you have validated on demo.
- Prop-firm — fully supported; many users run funded accounts. Prop-firm accounts have day-one drawdown considerations — see Prop-Firm Setup.
Risk Warning
Automated trading carries risk. Run any new channel or strategy on a demo account for 3–5 days before going live. TTMT provides the tools; risk management is your responsibility.
Multiple Accounts
You can connect more than one account. Common setups:
- Demo + live — test on demo, deploy proven strategies to live.
- Multiple brokers — diversify execution.
- Prop-firm challenges alongside a personal account.
Each account runs independently. You assign channels to accounts to control which signals trade where — see Multi-Account Trading.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Solution |
|---|---|
| "Connection Failed" | Double-check your password (case-sensitive), confirm the correct server, and check that your broker has not disabled the account. |
| "Read Only" error | You are using the Investor Password. Switch to the Trading Password. |
| Broker not listed | Upload a .srv server file from your broker's MT4/MT5 install folder. |
| Setup stuck | Wait up to 5 minutes, then disconnect and reconnect. Contact support if it persists. |
| "Symbol not found" | Your broker may use non-standard symbol names. See Symbol Mapping. |
Next Steps
Your broker is connected. The next connection is the account that receives your signals.
